This special duplex grade is formulated to provide a free machining alloy with good resistance to dezincification type corrosion experienced by normal hot working brasses. This resistance is obtained by careful control of composition and the heat treatment of the alloy prior to despatch. The machining grade stocked at Columbia is already heat treated to optimum resistance. Dezincification is similar to many other chemical processes and accelerates with increased temperature.
Dezincification resistance is therefore essential for line fittings in hot water systems where the water is known to be aggressive.
COLFIT DZR also sustains its dezincification resistance in seawater and can be used in filters and on through-hull fittings. Tests show that on a fully submerged sea water filter DZR brass suffered only 20µm penetration compared with 100µm for CZ112 naval brass.
The replacement of components which have failed
underground can be difficult and costly. Byelaws now require that all
underground fittings must be resistant to dezincification owing to the
widespread occurrence of contaminated and corrosive soil waters. COLFIT
DZR offers a low cost corrosion resistant alternative for all industries
which utilize underground distribution networks e.g. gas, electricity,
telecommunications.
