We are able to confirm that the alloy is the most advanced high strength copper nickel/nickel bronze alloy currently available. Irrespective of any other cupronickel alloys introduced into the market, NIBRON SPECIAL remains the only one with a proven track record and with no reported failures since its introduction over four years ago. This cannot be said for any other high strength cupronickel.

Of the many tonnes of NIBRON SPECIAL now in service worldwide, the majority has been supplied for use in safety-critical applications which depend heavily on high metallurgical quality and supplier integrity to ensure design requirements are achieved and to reduce the risk of failure. Columbia Metals teamed with NIBRON SPECIAL meet both these criteria with our technical expertise and code of business ethics.

The success of NIBRON SPECIAL can largely be attributed to the alloy’s metallurgical simplicity. The alloy does not require additional heat treatment, often a problem area, but relies instead on its excellent properties obtained from careful control of composition and a superior manufacturing route. This provides a material with a stable metallurgy, high corrosion resistance and high tolerance to mishandling in the field. NIBRON SPECIAL is still subject to an ongoing development programme to ensure the alloy remains at the top of its class.

Investigation work currently includes weldability and bearing studies, both of which are demonstrating the alloy’s inherent weldability and outstanding bearing properties as further confirmation of its value in the material selection process.
