EXTRA HIGH STRENGTH NICKEL BRONZE
Welds are produced exhibiting :
- High Metallurgical Integrity
- Good Mechanical Strength
- Excellent Ductility
The TIG welding process was used for the trials with argon and argon/helium sheilding gasses.
Various filler metals were investigated but nickel aluminium bronze gave the best results. NIBRON SPECIAL matching filler is not yet available.
Fillet welds between NIBRON SPECIAL and type 316 stainless steel were evaluated by dye penetrant inspection and by microscopic and macroscopic metallography of prepared sections which show that defect-free welds with complete sidewall fusion are being consistently produced.
Destructive bend tests at zero radius performed longitudinally through the fillet welds, demonstrated outstanding ductility in the welded joints.
The weldability of NIBRON SPECIAL to itself has been successfully demonstrated using a 50mm block into which a 70° angle weld preparation was machined to simulate a highly restrained, full penetration weld. Nickel aluminium bronze was used as the filler metal.
Subsequent metallographic examination and tensile testing across the weldment demonstrated excellent weld quality, good strength, ductility and reduction of area values.
This initial study has generated sufficient welding data and confidence to enable customers to develop welding procedures for their own joint designs for NIBRON SPECIAL and NIBRON SPECIAL to stainless steel.
